I was showing my brother the progress on https://ivebeen.cooking/, and he explained to me how certain aspects might not be effective and how some features could be a waste of time. Then I showed him the stats we were getting from social media (especially LinkedIn) along with our impressions and clicks - and his tone completely changed, but in a way that he didn’t realize, like it was subconscious to him. His initial perception was that https://ivebeen.cooking/ is a non-serious project made to waste time. To be fair, the idea of it in principle is tough to justify considering what’s already out there. I showed him the site a while ago, and he thought it was a small side project not too capable of getting enough traffic. I was describing the new articles feature, and he was providing negative yet thoughtful feedback, questioning both the project and the time required to implement those features. He had an overall negative position on it because, like any critic, he criticizes in the current tense and, I guess, a little too logically. Because of this, he asked if it produced any results. I showed him our followers and traffic, and his negative demeanor turned neutral and even positive by the end. He understands that projects start small, and getting little growth on an upward trend is a big deal. He hasn't had a project himself show that growth, so when I started to talk more about the features, he started listening more than speaking.
My brother and I go back and forth on ideas a lot-95% are just ideas. So when he understood our results, he grew respect for it. Almost like a "it doesn't seem correct but it's producing, so I must not understand it fully" moment for him.
Sometimes, our initial biases can blind us to genius. Persistence is equally important. Bad ideas are bad until they work. Then they're genius. I believe persistence and vision are crucial to reaching that point, but it's essential to respect roadblocks and adapt accordingly. Open your mind to harsh criticism, yet maintain an unwavering belief in your future success.
